Chebeague Community Sailing School

Sailing Fun for Kids

The sailing school offers sailing lessons to children age 8 and up. In 2022, there will be 3 two-week sailing sessions You can sign-up for one, two or three sessions.  For information about the different levels and times, please see the Class Descriptions below.


Starting in 2022, one parent or guardian of each sailing school student must be part of the Chebeague Island Yacht Club. Sign-up will be part of the sailing school enrollment. 


 - SESSION 1 - July 5 - July 15, 2022 

                          Boating Basics - July 5 - July 8

 - SESSION 2 - July 18 - July 29, 2022  

                          Boating Basics - July 18 - July 21

 - SESSION 3 -  August 1 - August 12, 2022 

                           Boating Basics - August 1 - August 5


Cost

Each two week session costs $225 per child.


Boating Basics, which runs for the first week only of each session costs $100 per child. 


      **NEW in 2022 - a parent, grandparent or guardian of each sailing school participant needs to be a member of the Chebeague Island Yacht Club. If you're not already a member, please complete the membership form (under MEMBERSHIP tab above) when you complete the online sailing school signup.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Boating Basics | 11-noon daily for the first week of each two week session

Basic boat handling safety, parts of the boat, knots, learning how to row, how to rig a sailboat and learning about wind and introduction to sailing. Ages 8 & 9

Beginner  | 12-2 daily

Safety, parts of a sailboat, rigging, how sails work, on the water sailing with an instructor in the boat, introduction to skippering, as well as ongoing work with knots, wind and weather awareness. Minimum age 9.

Intermediate  | 2-4 daily

On the water sailing and using the tiller, as well as ongoing work with knots, wind and weather awareness, capsize recovery, man overboard, and mooring. Intermediate sailors will sail with either an instructor or an experienced skipper. 

Advanced | 2-4 daily

Topics covered will include the skills listed under Beginner & Intermediate but at an advanced level; plus basic racing and man overboard recovery. Skippers will often captain the boats, being coached by an instructor in the launch or in another sailboat.

Racing  | 4-5:30 daily (usually the second week of each session
